The Levoča House

Levoca house is a well-preserved non-sacral building in the town. It is dated back to the second half of the 15th century. From 1542 - 69 the house was owned by Levoca, as a legacy of the rich salesman Alexander Thurzo from Levoca. It was purchased by the City of Košice in 1569 and an accommodating inn was founded here. Since then, dining services have been provided night and day, up to this date! The biggest wedding in Košice was celebrated in the presence of hundreds of guests in 1626. Leader of the anti - Habsburg rebellion Gabriel Bethlen got married with Catherine Brandenburg a sister-in-law of the Swedish king. Almost all European monarchs sent their delegates to the wedding.
In 1617 a leased part of the building was converted into the print-house of John Festh. It was the first print-house in Kosice at all.

The Levoca House was subjected to numerous restorations. In the 17th century it was rebuild in the Renaissance style with a stylized arcade in the courtyard. In the 18th century the building was Barocized. As a result of the reconstruction activities carried out in the years 1908 -1910 the original appearance of the buildng was significantly changed. In the years 1957 - 1959 the house was adjoined to the next-standing building.
