European Mobility Week

The City of Košice together with 1620 cities in 35 countries had the opportunity to participate in the European Mobility Week on September 16 – 22, 2009. The general objective of this event is to promote sustainable transport in cities and fulfilling the vision of a new urban mobility culture. The goal of this year´s programme in our city was to motivate the citizens of Košice and to raise their interest in more sustainable modes of transport in the city in order to improve the environment and their life style. This initiative in Košice involved the promotion of the ecological transport, the presentation of the project of the Integrated Transport System Košice, the presentation of perspective solutions for public transport and non-motorized transport, traffic education of children, improvement of the cycle track network, providing new services in the field of public urban transport. .
The accompanying programme offered a Transport Forum – public discussions and lectures on various aspects of transport, demonstration of the public transport vehicles, an entertainment programme and competitions for children, as well as an Inline Skate Carnival on the Hlavna Street. The organizers prepared an event „Non-motorized Street" on the Kuzmanyho street in the wider town centre on the last day of the European Mobility Week. From 10.00 a.m. to 18.00 p.m. a part of the road was closed to the motor-powered vehicles, but the entrance and exit of vehicles to the parking place near the block of flats was enabled. The closed part of the road belonged to children and students from Košice where they participated in various free time activities. The purpose of this event was to show a possibility that this part of the public road would be not intended for public carriages, but it would be a concourse for pedestrians, cyclists and general public.
The highlight of the European Mobility Week was a traditional Car – Free Day on September 22. The citizens were encouraged by the City of Košice to leave their cars at home and then they could use public transport for free. Mayor of the City of Košice František Knapík and other representatives of the city participated in the event, too.
