Local government for persons granted international protection

Certain groups of foreigners living in the territory of the Slovak Republic are represented by those to whom they have applied for international protection in the territory of the Slovak Republic - asylum seekers to whom such  international protection was granted by the Ministry of Interior – persons granted asylum and persons granted subsidiary protection[1].

  • A person granted asylum is considered to be a foreigner who has been granted permanent residence.
  • A foreigner who has been granted subsidiary protection is considered to be a foreigner granted temporary residence.

The Migration and Integration Department of the Migration Office of the Ministry of Interior of the Slovak Republic has a specific status. It addresses the integration of persons granted international protection. Integration managers ensure contact with institutions involved in the integration process. The Migration Office also ensures the supervision (quality monitoring) of the activities of non-governmental organisations responsible for the integration of persons granted international protection in order to guarantee a uniform standard within this area in the Slovak Republic.

The guide „New start in Slovakia“ for asylum seekers in the Slovak Republic in several languages can be dowloaded here.

Here you will find information leaflets, which, in addition to persons granted international protection, can also serve people who are in touch with them, e.g. office workers or employers.

The international protection is being granted by the national authority. It also supervises integration of people with granted international protection. However, municipalities are important in terms of housing, employment, education, etc.

The City of Košice supports a small number of persons with granted international protection (asylum or subsidiary protection) by allocating five social housing apartments on Adlerova street, Košice (managed by non-governmental organization) and by the provision of psychological support (through the Psychosocial Centre).
